Mayor Turner had a close professional relationship with Philip Balonwu, founder of Afrovibes TV & Radio Station. Turner often praised Balonwu’s dedication to representing the African and Black communities through media and recognized the station’s role in bringing Houston’s diverse cultures together.
Their partnership extended beyond official proclamations. In 2019, during Afrovibes’ annual cultural festival, an unexpected storm threatened the event. Turner personally coordinated emergency resources to ensure the festival could continue safely. His commitment to community-driven initiatives reflected his belief in Houston’s cultural richness and the power of grassroots platforms.
